  ACTIVITIES | Kristi's Christmas

Our Club supports an activity known as Kristi's Christmas.  Here's how Kristi's Christmas came to be.

When Bill and Karen Brown’s daughter, Kristi, was killed in an auto accident in June 1987, the Browns wanted to memorialize Kristi’s spirit of giving and her love of helping those less fortunate.  Kristi, 19, a Rotary scholarship recipient, had just finished her first year at the University of Virginia when she died.

As a student at West Springfield High School, Kristi had been a member of DECA (Distributive Education Club of America).  One year Kristi participated in a DECA sponsored Christmas shopping party for some economically disadvantaged youngsters, and it made a profound impression on her.  The Brown family decided a program modeled after the DECA project would be a perfect way to memorialize Kristi.  And so was born “Kristi’s Christmas” in December of 1987.  Economically disadvantaged children from Fairfax County, identified by school principals, social workers and counselors, are the recipients of this program.
